Football fans going to West Yorkshire derby warned of rail disruption

Supporters hoping to travel by train to the Huddersfield Town v Leeds United fixture, which starts at 12.30 on Saturday, are being warned to make alternative travel arrangements.

Huddersfield Railway Station will be closed as work on the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) continues, with the work involving the creation of two new platforms and the extension of existing platforms to improve capacity at the Grade I listed station.

A near-capacity crowd is expected at the John Smith's Stadium, with Huddersfield Town warning fans: "Transpennine Express have informed us that there will be disruptions to their rail lines on Saturday 2 March.

"No train services will be calling at Huddersfield Station due to engineering works as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade. However, rail replacement buses will be in operation into Huddersfield leaving from St. George's Square."

Upgrade work is set to take place on the railway in and around Huddersfield over multiple weekends throughout March and April.

Over these two months, engineers working on the multi-billion-pound project will upgrade tracks in Mirfield and Deighton, complete mining mitigation work around Huddersfield station and undertake work to Huddersfield viaduct.

This essential work will enable trains to achieve higher speeds and enhance the overall reliability of services passing through the area in the future, as the number of railway tracks increases from two to four.

While the railway line is temporarily closed to facilitate these upgrades, passengers will continue their journeys via diversionary routes and rail replacement buses.
