DATING back centuries, our Telegraph & Argus Pub of the Week has close links with a long-established brewery just a short walk away.

Originally called Ye Olde Red Lion, the popular pub in Church Street, Keighley, was renamed the Lord Rodney in the late 1700s in honour of a leading 18th-century British Admiral.

Its new name Taylor’s on the Green, “reflects the inn’s position in the town and its close relationship to Timothy Taylor’s brewery and their 165-year history in Keighley,” explains general manager Lorna Taylor.

The site was bought by Timothy Taylor’s in 2008 and following substantial restoration, traded as The Lord Rodney until June 2022 when it closed for redevelopment.

“The interior is now friendlier and more family-orientated, incorporating a wide variety of seating styles,” says Lorna.

“The design is in keeping with, and encompasses, Timothy Taylor’s unique brewing process. Encapsulating the aesthetic features of the company’s brewery tour, using materials such as reclaimed timber, industrial details and corrugated steel. These are enhanced by subtle accents such as amber-toned glass in the light fittings - this represented the quality assurance process when checking the colour of the beer.

“Timothy Taylor’s branding flows through the building, with a dedicated display case for merchandise made from reclaimed crates sourced from the brewery.”

Taylor’s on the Green opened on August 1, 2022 - Yorkshire Day - after a £300,000 investment from Timothy Taylor’s, which included new signage alongside a repainting of the outside of the pub with a total refresh inside, including a new bar, toilets, branding, and decoration, with a revamped heated outside seating area. Bowman Riley in Skipton provided interior design and Keighley-based RN Wooler builders worked with Timothy Taylor’s on the project.

“It’s in a fantastic location next to the main shopping area of Keighley, perfect for shoppers in need of some refreshment,” says Lorna, who has worked at the pub since it opened, starting as assistant manager, before being promoted to general manager, a job she loves.

“My job brings something new every day, and I take great pleasure in getting to know both new customers and our lovely regulars,” she says.

The pub prides itself on its warm welcome. “Anyone visiting will be greeted by a friendly smile and attentive service. We have a few regulars who keep us entertained with their stories - and terrible jokes - but we wouldn’t have them any other way.”

A popular spot to dine, the pub has an appetising menu. “We serve a mouth-watering menu of home-cooked favourites with a modern twist. Also a hit are the tapas-style small plates which you can match beautifully with our Timothy Taylor’s beer flights, through the pairing suggestions provided. We also offer a great range of vegan and vegetarian dishes, with the majority of our dishes also being gluten free. Plus, we have some of the best Sunday roasts in town.”

The dog-friendly pub stocks a wide range of Timothy Taylor’s award-winning cask and keg ales. After its opening year it was selected for CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide.

There’s live music on the last Saturday of every month, starting at 9pm. Ranging from local tribute acts to nationally-renowned bands, and acoustic sets.
