A CAR towing a stolen caravan was dumped and then the people inside ran on a motorway.

West Yorkshire Police received a report just after 9pm last night that a car towing a caravan had failed to stop for officers.

The force then received news shortly after that the vehicles had been abandoned on the entry slip-road to the eastbound carriageway of the M62 at junction 26 (Chain Bar/M606).

The occupants of the car were said to be "running on the motorway network".

Police closed part of the eastbound carriageway of the M62 briefly, as a result.

National Highways: Yorkshire said at 9.27pm last night that traffic was being held within junction 26, with delays building.

Traffic was released around 20 minutes later.

A spokesperson for National Highways: Yorkshire said last night: "Some restrictions remain on the entry slip road, but traffic can pass."

Police recovered the car and caravan from the slip-road.

It was later confirmed that the caravan had been stolen from outside the West Yorkshire Police area.

Officers are continuing to investigate the matter.

A full statement from West Yorkshire Police said: "At 9:01pm last night (Wednesday, 7 February) it was reported that a car towing a caravan has failed to stop for police.
