IT'S amazing what the power of the wind can do. There's been no shortage of storms in the first month of this year, bringing down trees, damaging homes and leaving communities flooded and without power.
Here, we take a look at the damage in Parish Ghyll Road, Ilkley, caused by a fierce storm back in 1962. It would take strong blasts to dislodge and move those large coping stones, not to mention demolish the rest of the wall. It looks like someone was going to have to find a new trellis as well.
Storms are becoming more intense, it's thought, because warmer sea surface temperatures increase wind speeds. Since August 2023, at least one named storm a month has hit the UK. December brought three and there have already been three this January: Henk, Isha and Jocelyn. We should brace ourselves for many more.
