STORMS Jocelyn and Isha have thrashed through the North this week, leaving a trail of destruction.

Weather warnings for wind and rain have been issued, with gusts of 80mph in some areas and 40-50mm of rain on higher ground. Thousands of people were left without power and, in the Yorkshire Dales, a number of people were rescued by firefighters from flooded roads.

A Network Rail spokesman said hundreds of engineers were deployed with chainsaws and cherry pickers to remove debris from tracks.

High winds have long caused havoc in the Bradford district.

Pictured here are some youngsters on Griffe Head Road in Wyke, where wild winds ripped up this tree and planted it across the road, back in September 1983.

It must have been a nuisance for residents and motorists, but it created a new, albeit temporary, play facility for these children.
