TELEGRAPH & Argus readers have been reminiscing about their times in a city centre cafe which has closed after 50 years.

The Athenium Coffee House, located inside Kirkgate Market, is shut following half a century of business.

It is understood the business came to an end on December 30, 2023.

A notice on the cafe's window added: "We would like to express to all our customers our greatest gratitude for your continued support and patronage over the last 50 years."

On our Facebook page, many of you recalled your happy memories of the cafe and thanked the owners for their service.

Dawn Moffatt said: "I used to be a Saturday girl at Graveleys frozen foods in the early eighties and would go in here for our breaks and dinner, lovely cafe as are the other cafes. I still called for a sandwich and cuppa when I ventured into town."

Vanessa White said: "So sad. Been going to this cafe since I was little."

Dena Jayne added: "Many fond memories going here. Went a few months back to have one last dinner here before it closed."

David Cummings said: "Used to go every Saturday with my Gran back in the day. Great Memories.

Lynn Gutsell said: "This was my mum and dad's favourite cafe. They always went in for a cuppa and a bacon butty, the owners were lovely too, so sad."

Joanne Lee added: "Great cafe, sad to see it go. Thank you for all your years of service."

Guy Arnett said: "Good memories..went in there when I had my first Saturday job at Top Gear in Kirkgate Market 40 years ago."

Gail Smith said: "Steak pie, chips, and peas! used to have to wait for a table late 70's early 80's it was that popular."

Sarah Goodwin added: "End of an era."

Some of you even once worked there.

Jasmin River Waterhouse said: "I used to work here before I had my eldest child. The owners were wonderful people and I loved working there!"

Lisa Gorman added: "Bless them all. My first ever job. The owner always remembered me 30 years later."

Vicky Christensen said: "I had my first Saturday job there! Might have been a little while ago."

Darley Street Market, which will house around 40 businesses, is expected to open this May.
