DEMOLITION work had to be carried out on two Bradford properties after excavation instructions were not followed, leaving them in a “dangerous state”, Bradford Council has revealed.

Bradford demolition firm Thomas Crompton was called in last week by the Council to undertake the demolition of the rear of numbers 117 and 119 Southfield Lane, in Great Horton.

The buildings were previously two separate shops with one being a fish and chip shop.

The demolition works carried out last Friday were not visible from the road, but a local resident described the rear of the property as a “scene of utter devastation” with the work of tearing down the building well under way.

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: “Both the Planning and Building Regulation departments at the council have received applications for rear basement and a two-storey rear extensions to buildings at 417/419 Southfield Lane.

“Excavations had been carried out at the rear however, builders had not followed the details provided by the Structural Engineer causing a load bearing wall to slip leaving the internal floors roof in a dangerous state.

“Our Building Control were called in along with the HSE Structural Engineers and a representative of the owner, it was agreed that to make the buildings safe a controlled demolition needed to be carried out. The immediate danger has now been removed and the works are ongoing.”
