VOLUNTEERS in one Bradford neighbourhood came together to decorate a community garden to commemorate Remembrance Day.

The garden on New Hey Road in East Bowling was first created in the summer holidays by volunteers living nearby – the second such plot of land they have taken over in recent years.

After lots of digging and planting flowers, shrubs and bulbs, organisers turned the garden over to a Halloween theme last month as a surprise for the local children that had helped out.

At the weekend, the Next Generation GDN as it is known, was decorated with poppies and signs to mark Remembrance Day, which is observed on November 11.

One of the volunteers told the Telegraph & Argus: “We started the garden in the summer holidays, then the children joined us.

“They weeded, dug, removed litter and planted bulbs.

“Once people knew what we were doing, the good people of East Bowling started stopping me donating plants, even bulbs were left at the newsagents I use.

“The children have been brilliant they wanted to learn and take part, even down to watering the plants.”

She added that they had decided to use the garden for education purposes, celebrating all faiths and beliefs.
