A NEW doggy daycare and grooming business has opened in Saltaire.

OJ’s Dog Den is named after Otis and Jess, the two retrievers belonging to business owner Chris Bentley.

Otis is a four-month-old “bouncy but impeccably behaved puppy “ - the energy of the company, says Chris - and Jess is a laid back 13-year-old girl - the brains of the operation.

“I am thrilled to offer a commercial dog daycare and grooming service to the community,” says Chris. “People love their dogs, and daycare is great for socialisation, easing separation anxiety, and mental and physical exercise.”

As well as daycare, OJ’s offers several grooming services. “There are some great local groomers. What makes ours unique is that our grooms are ‘all day’ grooms,” says Chris “If you’re working all day, you don’t have to worry about appointment slots - you can simply drop off your dog in the morning before work and collect them after.

“Also, with an ‘all day’ groom, we can give the dogs plenty of breaks if they start to get tired or restless.”

OJ’s sells a range of products, from treats to dog cologne, and takes a slightly different approach to dog grooming too.

Chris is a former assistant headteacher and English teacher at a secondary school. “I have spent much of my career having a duty of care for the children of the community and now I take that duty of care into looking after the pets of the community,” he says.

Chris holds two grooming qualifications - City and Guilds level 3 and ICMG Advanced Groomer - and is also qualified in Canine health and First Aid.

The OJ’s Dog Den property has two large themed indoor play areas: one has a sports section, agility section and a living-room area and the other is a replica of a beach and tropical paradise. There are also relaxation dog pods and a secure outside area with artificial grass for dogs to play and toilet.

Lisa Lyons, a customer at the ‘dog salon’, says: “My German Shepherd has been to OJ’s Dog Den for both grooming and daycare and I cannot fault the service.

“The area has really needed a business like OJ’s and I’m sure that local dog owners will be glad as it is so accessible, easy to book and on their doorstep.”

OJ’s, which is licensed bh Bradford Council, is holding an open day on Saturday, November 18. Dog owners are invited to go along with their dog to register, and have a temperament assessment.

* OJ’s Dog Den, 68 Saltaire Road, Saltaire, is open Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6pm.
