A PLAY set in a police station involved in the Peter Sutcliffe manhunt is at Ilkley Playhouse this week.

The Incident Room centres on Millgarth Police Station in Leeds, which is featured in ITV drama The Long Shadow, about the murders and search for the killer.

The first night was attended by Sir Rodney Brooke, former Chief Executive of West Yorkshire Police Authority. Sir Rodney recently wrote in the T&A about his role in the case, as the link between the police investigation and the Home Secretary. He wrote: "As murder followed murder physical evidence mounted. The police interviewed over a quarter of a million people and took 28,687 statements. The weight of paper meant the floor of the incident room at Millgarth Police Station had to be strengthened."

Sir Rodney was with Assistant Chief Constable George Oldfield when he listened to the 'Wearside Jack' tape. He challenged Oldfield's decision to authenticate the tape as coming from the killer.

Sir Rodney, who wrote of his experiences in his book The Winding Stair, said of The Incident Room: “I can’t tell you how impressed I was by the production: really professional."

* The Incident Room is at Ilkley Playhouse until Saturday, November 11.
