THE redevelopment of a long derelict Conservation Area building may now also include a roof garden.

Earlier this year, an application to convert Galem House – a seven-storey warehouse off Sunbridge Road - into 77 apartments was approved.

Now applicants Coverstone Investments Ltd and Trident House Developments Ltd have applied to alter the approved plans to create an outdoor space for future residents on the new roof of the building.

The new application says the changes “will significantly enhance the property.”

It adds: “The roof terrace will secure the provision of outdoor amenity space on site for the proposed occupiers, without the need to reduce the number of approved units, nor to increase the height of the approved development.

“The provision of secure and private outdoor amenity space, and the benefits this will create for future occupiers in relation to their mental health and wellbeing clearly support the principle and acceptability of the proposed changes.

“The creation of the proposed roof terrace will also assist in enhancing the greening of the urban landscape, which offers significant environmental and ecological benefits, as well as enhancing the onsite biodiversity.”

The development was recently awarded £1.2m through the Government’s Brownfield Housing Fund – a pot of cash designed to kick start development on long vacant sites.
