A WEST Yorkshire Police worker has been dismissed after calling a female detainee a "vile creature".

PS Warren Gray, a custody sergeant in the Calderdale District, sent a catalogue of text messages and images to 'Ms A' while on duty between November 2021 and August last year.

After sending a text saying he had just been called a "pretty boy nonce", PS Gray proceeded to send a photo of a female detainee with a message calling her a "vile creature”.

He also said what she had been arrested for during the episode on the morning of June 10.

Four days later, PS Gray, who joined the police in 2009, told 'Ms A' that he had just been dealing with a "proper d***head".

This was proceeded by another text saying he had "put him in his place" and an image of a male in custody captioned “that was him – w***er”.

He also referred to the detainees as “scruffs of our society”.

On July 2, he informed 'Ms A' that an officer had been brought into custody for an alleged offence.

PS Gray sent videos of a male in custody on February 24 and a female detainee kicking a cell door, along with revealing her name, on April 16.

He also sent photos of the custody whiteboard, showing the surnames of detainees, what they had been arrested for, and any health issues.

This happened on June 2 and November 21 - where prisoners and scene information was also revealed.

Finally, on August 22, PS Gray sent a photograph of a police computer which showed the screens and the custody suite cameras.

'Ms A' made officers aware of the pair's messages on September 1, 2022.

PS Gray accepted he had breached the Standards of Professional behaviour, and that his conduct amounted to gross misconduct.

PS Gray served as a PC in both neighbourhood and patrol policing in Halifax before becoming a Detective Constable in 2019.

He was promoted to Sergeant in 2020 and had no previous formal disciplinary findings.

By November 2021, he had been deployed as a temporary custody sergeant – a role that was subsequently made permanent.

In conclusion, chair of the hearing Nick Hawkins said: "The only sanction that the panel can impose today, that marks the seriousness of your breaches of professional standards, is that of Dismissal without Notice.”
