PLANS to install an ATM in a listed former pub have been refused, with Conservation officers saying it will “detract from the traditional character” of the 18th Century building.

The former Kings Arms on Great Horton Road was built as a house in the 1730s, later becoming a popular local pub.

In 2021 Bradford Council approved a planning application to convert the building into a restaurant.

And this Summer a further application – to install an illuminated ATM in the front of the building, was submitted by Cardtronics UK Ltd.

But the application has now been refused by officers, who have also revealed that the Council has launched an enforcement investigation over other recent changes to the building.

Design and Conservation officer Hannah Meekings said she had “serious concerns” about the plans, adding: “The property has been much altered, affecting its traditional character and significance (some of these alterations form part of an ongoing Enforcement investigation).

“The insertion of the machine will require the creation of an opening within the front elevation of the building, which will impact on the historic fabric of the building.  The ATM machine itself will be a modern and discordant feature, with an illuminated screen and a illuminated fascia sign above.  It will appear visually intrusive, detracting from the traditional character of the heritage asset.”
