The heartbroken mum of an eight-year-old boy who died after being hit by a car in Yorkshire has paid tribute to her "kind and caring" son who she says "always lit up the room".

Joshua Slater was killed instantly when he was knocked down by a Land Rover last week in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

Emergency services rushed to the scene just before 6pm on September 5, but the year three pupil was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests have been made and the driver was helping officers with their inquiries, North Yorkshire Police said.

In a heartfelt tribute issued a week after his death, Joshua's mum Kirsty said he was “a bundle of joy, who was always smiling and always lit up the room."

She thanked the emergency services who attended the crash and people in the town for their support.

Kirsty added: "He loved everyone in his life, his family, and his friends, he loved music and motorbikes and football, he was a proud Chelsea fan.

"Joshua was kind and caring and loved with every part of his soul especially his mum, we were best mates.”

Joshua was a pupil at Cambrai Primary School in the town.

Executive headteacher Mark Dent said in a statement: "Joshua was a shining light of love, friendship and fun within our school family.

"We are heartbroken to know that we will never see his smile, or hear his giggles again, but our memories of him will never fade.

"Our school community will come together during this sad time to support each other, his family and friends. He will always be part of Cambrai."

A police spokesman previously said: "Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage after an eight-year-old boy died following a collision in Catterick Garrison.

"Officers were called by the ambulance service at 5.49pm to Somerset Close following a report that a child pedestrian had been involved in a collision with a white Land Rover Discovery Sport.

"Tragically, the boy died at the scene from his injuries. The boy’s family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

"At this time, no arrests have been made and the driver of the vehicle is assisting us with our enquiries."

Witnesses and drivers with dashcam footage are asked to contact police.
