A HOST of venues and sites across the Bradford district will open up in the coming week as part of the Heritage Open Days. 

The annual event, which takes place across the country from September 8 to 17 will see the likes of City Hall, Bradford Cathedral and he Industrial Museum open up their doors and shine a spotlight on what makes them so special. 

Here is a guide to some of the venues that will be opening up in Bradford district this month.

Bolling Hall - A Bradfordian Banquet

A day of food-focused short talks will be held at Bolling Hall on Thursday, September 14, between 10.30am and 12.30pm.

The event will guide visitors through the history of food and will include a look at objects from the collections of Bradford District Museums and Galleries and the photographic archive.

Bradford City Centre Heritage Trail

A walking tour of some of the historic buildings in Bradford city centre will also take place.

It is recommended that participants start their free self-guided walk at City Hall.

The Bradford Heritage Trail is a casual walk involving city centre footpaths and is pushchair and wheelchair friendly.

The first part of the walk should take two hours.

Bradford Industrial Museum

At the long-standing museum, visitors will be able to take a virtual tour of a Victorian horse cabmen’s shelter’ at its Moorside Road site on Saturday, September 9.

Times are yet to be confirmed.

The shelter was originally at the top of Darley Street in Bradford, and subsequently moved to the entrance of Exchange Railway Station, itself demolished in 1973.

The shelter was donated to Crich Tramway Museum, Derbyshire, in 1973 by the Bradford Taxi Association, which was responsible for it.

Following a restoration project, the shelter was scanned digitally, the tramway museum is keen to share the results with Bradford.

St George’s Hall

St George’s Hall will hold its 170th Big Birthday Bash at the Bridge Street venue on Sunday, September 10, between 10am and 4pm.

The event will feature free self-guided tours around the venue, family activities, volunteers in costume playing historical characters around the Grade II-listed building and a chance to go backstage.

Manningham Walk

People will also have the chance to take an in-person guided walk around Manningham in Bradford city centre.

The free walk with a guide in costume on Sunday, September 17, from 2pm will last for around one hour and 45 minutes.

The start is from just outside the main entrance to Listers Mill on the corner with the adjacent Patent Street.
