A DRUGGED-up driver who smashed into a parked vehicle and a garden wall after doing up to 91mph while trying to outrun the police has been jailed for 15 months.

Yusuf Takolia forced pedestrians to run out of the way of his Vauxhall Astra during the high-speed pursuit, Bradford Crown Court heard.

“You have to grow up and not behave in this way, putting life and limb at risk and in danger,” the judge locking him up said.

Takolia, 25, of Fairway, Wibsey, Bradford, was in breach of a suspended sentence order for a drugs offence, prosecutor Emma Handley said.

He pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to dangerous driving while above the cannabis limit on October 23 last year.

Miss Handley told the court that police on patrol at 3.10pm saw the Astra on Ingleby Road in Bradford.

Takolia sped off, doing double the speed limit and narrowly avoiding a collision.

He was pursued down Hollings Road, Thornton Road and Preston Road, mounting a pavement and going the wrong way down a No Entry street, forcing pedestrians to run out of the way.

He headed for Clayton Village and did up to 91mph before the police lost sight of him. Members of the public directed them to the Astra that had crashed into a parked car and a garden wall.

Miss Handley said damage to the householder’s property totalled £2,800.

Takolia attempted to flee on foot but was detained by members of the public.

There were two bags of cannabis in the car and he was over the limit for the drug.

He had six previous convictions for ten offences, including driving while disqualified, drug driving and taking without consent. He was in breach of a nine-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, for a drug-related offence.

Felicity Hemlin said in mitigation that Takolia’s parents were in court and the impact on them would be profound if he went to prison.

His life had been on hold since committing the offences and he offered his sincere apologies.

Recorder Taryn Turner said he had driven at wildly excessive speeds while under the influence of a controlled drug.

He had been given opportunities before and he was subject to a suspended sentence order.

Takolia was jailed for 12 months, and three months of the suspended sentence was activated, making 15 months in all.

He was banned from driving for three years on his release from prison and until he passes an extended test.
