A NEW community café has opened offering locals fresh food at a time where many families are struggling.

We Are Queensbury, an independent organisation helping people in the area has moved to bigger premises to develop and enhance the work they are already doing.

Now based on High Street, Queensbury, the community café opened its doors yesterday to over 100 locals who were excited to see what the new space had to offer.

Mobeen Hussain, Founder and Chair of We Are Queensbury, said: “The grand opening was really good.

“Loads of people came and it felt like a real community event.

“We are so glad to now be offering the community café so we can help more people and with the new space we can hopefully do more things from here.”

Healthy and fresh food options, such as paninis, sandwiches and cakes are available to customers at an affordable price.

Plans have been in place for the community café for six months as the group decided to stop outsourcing the meals they provide to the community and decided to take on the scheme by themselves.

“We thought it would be easier to cut out the middleman and do it ourselves, it was more efficient and we can reach more families and people this way.

“We’re just a community group, promoting unity and bringing people together.

“Our aim is to reach as many people as possible through the various things we do, including the foodbank and the breakfast meals we provide to school.”

We Are Queensbury provide meals to schools in the area to ensure no child goes hungry, whilst also providing meals for children throughout the summer holidays.

“We don’t base it on free school meals because who are we to say who’s struggling and who isn’t?

“All the work we are doing is being put back into the foodbank, so we can help more people.”

The group has recently been awarded £100,000 from the National Lottery fund and aims to help better the lives of people around them.
