News of the huge security upgrade at Leeds Bradford Airport – bringing changes at passenger checkpoints – has prompted a mixed reaction from passengers.

As the Telegraph & Argus reported earlier this week, the upgrade will see trays fed automatically to passengers and there will no longer be a need to remove electronics and approved liquids from carry-on baggage.

Airport chiefs have signed a major deal with leading science and technology company Leidos, which will deliver the 'industry-leading equipment' at the Yeadon airport.

A Facebook post by the T&A, with a link to the article, attracted more than 150 comments, with readers expressing a wide range of views on the announcement and their opinions on LBA in general.

And one passenger joked that they hoped the improvements would reduce the risk of embarrassing incidents at the security counter.

"Hope I can leave my trouser belt on, cause I forgot and went through the screen with my pants round my ankles," said Alwyn Robertson.

Many welcomed news of the improvements, which will see Leidos deliver four integrated ClearScan and ProPassage lanes, while others said they already found the airport to be one of the smoothest.

Christine Prenty said: "I've flown from here many times never had a problem - can't do with hustle and bustle at Manchester."

Chris Milnes agreed, saying: "LBA in my experience is already one of the smoothest regional airports for security checks. Very quick and super friendly staff. I look forward to seeing this in action."

Chris Russell echoed that viewpoint by saying: "I've recently been in and out of Leeds, going through security departing was a breeze, took about 15 minutes in total and coming back was equally as quick as boarder guards has about 7 gates in operation, no issues at all."

Joe Ace added: "Brilliant local airport, been from there many times."

James Calvert said: "Great service throughout, never a problem.

"I guess the baggage dept might need modernising one day."

Mr Calvert wasn't the only person to mention the baggage department.

Pat Hirst said: "It would be great if they could also upgrade the baggage hall as its third world and also get airbridges so you didn't have to get wet through walking miles outside!"

Martin Patchett added: "Just need to add a few more luggage carousels now so five fights don’t need to be on the same one as it was when I returned from holiday this month."

Some questioned whether the security upgrade would have a financial implication for passengers.

Paul Newbould said: "And an opportunity to stick on some extra charges."

Stephen West has similar concerns, stating: "I bet they charge for it."

But Janet Pedders Pedley replied: "They already have these in other countries, it’s progress not an excuse to charge people."

She added: "Bratislava have this tech, no charge."

Some observers were less positive about the LBA experience, saying they preferred other airports.

Les Smith said: "It’s time to sort out custom. It takes ages to get through when you have just landed. Any other airport have plenty of room to go through and more custom officers."

Jason Scanlon said: "LBA is awful, I’m only a few miles away but will always fly from Manchester if possible."

James Harrop was also less than impressed, stating: "Unlikely to ever use this airport ever again. I’d rather catch a plane from Lancashire!"

Craig Hebberd said: "The airport needs knocking down and starting again."

Nanak Singh Lall said: "The whole terminal building wants knocking down and rebuilding, but there was too many people who complained and it never happened."

Lyndsey McMillan Mott said: "Never had a problem getting through security. Passport control on return thought is a nightmare."

Jonny Milne questioned whether the new tech would have an impact on staffing levels at the airport, saying: "Sounds good, but in reality there’ll be plenty of things they still have to pull and search with less people to do it, the funds will of gone on the equipment not personnel.

"It’ll be like when you need someone to monitor self checkouts."

Michael Cawthera said: "Many airports around the world now have this scanning technology, not sure why UK airports have been so slow on the uptake.

"It will make a massive difference in clearing security and will also do away with the 100ml liquid ruling."
