SAFETY improvements on a motorway bridge will enter the final phase on Monday.

National Highways is replacing the north and south bridge parapets at Gildersome Interchange, where the M621 meets junction 27 of the M62.

The enhancements on the parapets began in February, with phases 1 and 2 now complete.

To carry out the work safely, there will be overnight full closures (8pm-6am) on the clockwise (eastbound) section of the bridge from Monday (July 10) until Friday, August 4.

There will be 24-hour lane 2 closures on the M621 clockwise carriageway.

Lane 1 will also be closed on the approach to junction 27 M62, where it meets the M621.

National Highways Project Manager Gordon Behrens said: “The bridge parapets need to be renewed to ensure the route remains safe, and we’re pleased to say this work is now almost complete.

“Due to the layout of this part of the motorway and for safety reasons, our traffic management needs to start on the M62 and M621 some distance in advance of the bridges, to enable the work on the bridge itself.

“While closures are in place, we strongly advise people planning to travel in this area to allow more time for their journeys.”
