CHRIS Surtees has swapped laying floors for pulling pints - and he couldn’t be happier.
Chris worked as a floor layer for more than 20 years before being made redundant, and took the opportunity to open an American-themed micro pub.
Set on the corner of a cobbled street in Pudsey, the Silver Dollar Bar - our Telegraph & Argus Pub of the Week - is quirky and welcoming.
“It’s a community pub with a great atmosphere. “I’ve got lots of regulars who live nearby and others who have discovered us," Chris says.“My regulars do a lot for me - they organise quiz nights on Wednesdays, which go down well.”
Chris opened the pub five years ago and put his stamp on it, decorating it to reflect his love of the USA.
“I go to the USA a lot with my family and bring back souvenirs and my customers also bring things in. We have US registration plates, dollar bills, gambling chips from Las Vegas, cowboy hats and boots, moonshine bottles and many pictures.”
The Richardshaw Lane bar sits on the end of a long, York stone building. “It’s a big building divided into sections and I’m at the front. The pub is set over three levels, with the bar on the second. We have sofas on the top floor where people can relax. It’s full of character.”
Three cask ales are on offer: Saltaire Brewery’s Citra, Three Swords from Kirkstall Brewery and a third beer that changes.
“We are the only pub around here selling three different cask beers. Some people come along especially to try them. Three Swords is selling like mad at the moment,” says Chris.
San Miguel, Carling and Silver Dollar lager are also popular. There’s also a wide range of gins.
Outside, seating lines one side of the pub. “It’s a real sun trap, it gets red hot out there. People can sit, have a drink and watch the world go by.
“It has taken time to get there, but now the bar is really taking off.”
Chris loves his new vocation. “It’s a lot better for my knees,” he jokes. “I like the social side, I like meeting people, chatting and having a laugh - you ever know who is going to come in. I have made new friends as well.”
As well as the weekly quiz, every few months the pub hosts a themed night. “The last one was 1930s’ detectives, and we have had an eighties night, a Halloween night and a fourth of July night among others. People bring along food and it’s great fun.
