BINGLEY Weekender is to have a Manchester theme this year as organisers have announced who will headline the opening night.

In years gone by, the festival, hosted at Bradford & Bingley Rugby Club on Wagon Lane, has lasted for three days - Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Last week, organisers announced the festival will begin with an 'Opening Party' on Thursday, August 3.

Shaun Ryder's Happy Mondays are to kickstart the four-day extravaganza before Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Ian Brown take to the stage in the proceeding days.

With hits like ‘Step On’ and ‘Kinky Afro', the band were one of the biggest on the Madchester scene in the early nineties.

Earlier this year, frontman Ryder was one of the first to be sent home in the maiden series of ITV show I'm a Celebrity... South Africa.

Organisers say more acts are still to be announced for Thursday - where entry is exclusive to weekend ticket-holders only.

A post on the Bingley Weekender Facebook page read: "Happy Monday!

"You called it! Was it our not-so-subtle clue? We weren’t twistin’ your melon man.

"To celebrate this glorious Monday, we’re thrilled to announce that Happy Mondays will be headlining Thursday, August 3, at Bingley Festival."

2023 (August 3-6) is set to be one of the biggest years in the festival's long history.

With his new album ‘Council Skies’, released last week, Gallagher will be delivering a memorable set of songs from his 10-year solo career, as well as a selection of Oasis classics.

Joining Noel on the festival line-up is the frontman of one of the most influential British bands of the 1980s and 90s The Stone Roses, who had a string of legendary hits including 'I Wanna Be Adored', 'I am The Resurrection' and 'Fools Gold'.

Multi-platinum and BRIT award-winning band Travis will be headlining the festival on Sunday night.

Most recently, the band have toured their classic albums 'The Man Who' and 'The Invisible Band'.

Meanwhile, James Bay will play the festival on Sunday, August 6.

He released his single 'Hold Back the River' in 2014, which was certified platinum, before releasing his debut studio album 'Chaos and the Calm'.

Razorlight, Jake Bugg, Kate Nash and The Zutons will also perform across the three days.

Last year, the three-day event, headlined by Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, The Libertines and Pixies, was witnessed by a crowd of over 20,000 people.
