AND they're off...
Pictured here is the 1956 Bradford Whit Walk. Our photo gallery of Whit Walks this week has prompted memories of the road race on the T&A's We Grew Up in Bradford Facebook page.
Here are some of them:
Sue Watson Chambers: 'I used to go watch them come to the finish line in the park every Whit Monday with my mam, then on to the Whit Fair.'
Lynn Catena: We would watch them with Dad outside the Roebuck pub in Greengates.'
Elly Fox: 'We always saw the start, then got the bus to The Branch at Shipley, then home for lunch before seeing the finish in Peel Park.'
Tony Heaton: 'I used to follow them around on my bike all the way. Hadn't a clue where we were going but we knew we'd end up in Peel Park.'
Karen Gill: 'Used to go to the Junction to watch them every year in our new Whitsuntide clothes.'
Andrew Ward: 'Remember seeing them as a kid, very strange how they walked but now know how difficult to race walk. We need to bring this back. Bradford at Whitsuntide, a real festival weekend.'
