A BRADFORD City legend who opened up about a medical condition that affects his speech in a TV documentary is battling a host of celebrities and sports stars for a leading award.
Chris Kamara has been named on the long list in the authored documentary category of the National Television Awards. This is in recognition of his ITV documentary, Lost for Words, which was first shown on ITV1 in December last year.
He is now looking for public votes from viewers as he aims to be named the category’s winner at the ceremony, to be held in London on Tuesday, September 5. Mr Kamara is one of 25 documentaries which has been named on the long list.
The former Bradford City player and manager revealed that he has apraxia of speech (AOS), a disorder that affects the way a person connects speech messages from their brain to their mouth.
He was initially diagnosed in October 2021 and went public about his condition in March last year.

Chris Kamara: Lost For Words followed the popular broadcaster as he seeked advice from experts and meets others with AOS who are making their way through this rare condition.
Earlier this week he pulled out as the host of the UK's Strongest Man due to ‘ongoing speech problems’.
The popular football pundit, 65, was due to appear at Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham between May 27 and 29.

But he tweeted on Monday to say he has "reluctantly pulled out" of presenting the show due to his "ongoing speech problems."
Mr Kamara faces tough opposition for the National TV Awards crown.
The 25-name long list also features former rugby league star, Kevin Sinfield, for his BBC documentary Going The Extra Mile, which follows his series of challenges raising money in aid of motor neurone disease charities in honour of his former Leeds Rhinos team-mate Rob Burrow, who has the condition.
Other awards category contender include Mr Burrow for his own BBC programme – Rob Burrow: Living with MND.
Social media star and influencer KSI has also been named on the long list for his Amazon Prime film – KSI: In Real Life. Actor and model Pamela Anderson has also been nominated for her Netflix documentary – Pamela: A Love Story. Katie Price: Trauma and Me is also in the running for the award.
People can vote for their chosen winner in each of the 16 categories.
