Bradford is leading the way in a landmark clinical trial on patients living with heart disease and obesity.

Bradford Patient Recruitment Centre will analyse how a drug called CagriSema, typically used to help people lose weight, affects cardiovascular patients.

Consultant Cardiologist Steven Lindsay said: “Obesity is an increasing problem for the health service and a healthy diet combined with regular exercise is the best way to control and reduce weight.

“For those who are overweight and have cardiovascular diseases, losing weight can be a challenge because their underlying condition limits their ability to exercise.”

Keith Winn, 75, from Bradford is among the first participants to take part in the trial.

Mr Winn, a retired health and safety construction consultant and former caving and climbing instructor, collapsed with a heart attack 15 years ago.

Mr Winn will self inject the medication on a weekly basis and check his blood sugar levels daily.

“If we don’t take part in research studies like these, things won’t progress,” he said.

“The heart attack stopped me doing lots of things I loved but I can still go walking, although it has to be on the flat.”
