A BRADFORD primary school where some pupils "worry about their safety" due to the challenging behaviours of others has been rated Requires Improvement.

Co-op Academy Parkland, in Old Park Road, Thorpe Edge, was visited by Ofsted on March 8 and 9 this year, with the report published last Friday.

It received a Requires Improvement rating in all categories, other than personal development where the school was deemed to be Good.

This is the setting’s first inspection since joining the Co-op Academies Trust in late 2018. It had been rated as Requires Improvement as Parkland Primary School before that in 2016.

Ofsted found that the school’s development has been hampered by changes in staffing, including in leadership, over recent years.

But the report said: “Recent actions, including support provided by the trust, have brought about some much-needed improvements.

“There are signs that this work is beginning to have a positive impact.”

Most pupils at Parkland behave well, with calm working environments on the whole, and the number of behaviour-related incidents has reduced since the start of the academic year.

Inspectors found this is reflective of the high expectations leaders have of their students, with a new behaviour policy implemented in September 2022.

But the report said: “A small proportion of pupils continue to display challenging behaviours.

“This causes some pupils to worry about their safety.”

It adds that pupils are safe in the school though and if any have concerns adults are available for them to speak to.

Parkland still has work to do to ensure that subjects across the curriculum are designed and taught to a consistently high standard.

Changes here would mean all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), to benefit.

A spokesperson for Co-op Academies Trust said: “Though we are pleased with the progress we have made, particularly in Personal Development and SEND support, we have work to do to ensure every child gets the support they require through their education.

“We have expanded the leadership team, with two additional leaders starting this term, with experience and specialisms which will help us stretch the curriculum and make sure every child reaches their potential.

“A new Senior Learning Mentor is already having a positive impact on pupils, and our newly formed PTA (Parent Teacher Association), will play a key role in improving the school.

“The report shows good progress from the last Ofsted in 2017/18 but with the excellent support from the Trust, Parkland will be at least Good next time.

“Already since the recent Ofsted inspection, there has been increased staff capacity to accelerate improvements.”
