PUBS across Bradford are planning all sorts of celebrations to celebrate the King’s coronation this weekend, including one which will feature its very own ‘Queens’.

Q Gardens, on Pearson Road, Odsal, is decked out in Royal bunting, flags and staff will be wearing red, white and blue when the pub hosts a family fun day at the pub this Saturday.

The day will feature a barbecue, face painter, bouncy castle and DJ playing music. Then on Sunday, DJ Tony will play music followed by a UB40 tribute band at 7pm.

Debbie Lowe, operations director at Q Gardens, said: “I am a Royalist and have been all my life. I was brought up that way. My mother used to drag us to queue to see them whenever they came to visit.

“It’s history, not many people will have ever seen a coronation and it should be celebrated. Charles has certainly waited a long time.”

“I think having a King is a momentous day for society,” added Sean Lowe, managing director of Q Gardens.

Craig Dobson, a Q Gardens customer, said of the coronation: “It’s going to be a brilliant and iconic occasion. It’ll be a long time before we have another Queen. He’s been waiting for a long time.

“I’ll be coming to the fun day at Q Gardens with my family. Everybody’s getting together to watch it."

A nearby Odsal pub, The Top House, on Manchester Road, is all decked out in preparation for the coronation with bunting up outside and a number of decorations inside the pub.

“It’s a special event and I deck the pub for every occasion like this,” said Elaine Crowther, landlady of The Top House.

“It’s one of those things. It’s never happened in my lifetime.”

A Bradford city centre gay bar has come up with a eye-catching way to advertise its coronation celebrations.

The Sun Hotel, on Sunbridge Road, has posted an advert on Facebook which says: “Celebrate the King’s Coronation with our Queens! If easily offended stay away.”

DJ Timmy Tease, who is also the landlord of the Sun Hotel and the mastermind of the advert, said: “We’ve done the venue up and we’ll have drag queens hosting the evening – Frannie tonight, Daisy Dupont on Saturday and Legzana on Sunday.

“We get a very mixed crowd which is aimed at the gay crowd but plenty of straight people love it as well.”

Adam Jennings, a staff member at The Highfield, on Highfield Road, Idle, said: “The pub will be decorated and there will be special offers on drinks and food for the weekend. We’ll be showing the coronation.

“It’s a very momentous occasion for some, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see something special.”

"If the sun's shining it's going to be busy," said the assistant manager at The Great Northern on Leeds Road, Thackley.

The pub will even have a Royal-themed drinks special. The Royal Bramble, a Slingsby blackcurrant gin cocktail lemon juice and gone sugar, will be on offer two for £12.
