Life-saving lung cancer checks will be rolled out to every GP practice in Bradford after a successful trial.

NHS England launched 40 mobile scanners for lung cancer at the district’s GP surgeries between 2019 and 2022.

The pilot has already identified more than 100 suspected lung cancers and over 90 other conditions.

Plans are now being developed to ensure those aged between 55 and 74 years old can access lung checks close to home.

Those diagnosed with lung cancer at the earliest stage are nearly 20 times more likely to survive for five years.

Lung Health Checks are offered by GP surgeries through letter, text or phone call.

Following an initial assessment, those most at risk from lung cancer are then invited for a Lung CT scan.

Dr Sohail Abbas, Reducing Inequalities Alliance Director at Bradford District and Craven Health and Care Partnership, said: “People in the most deprived areas of our district are living with more ill health and dying earlier than those in the least deprived.

“It’s clear having these early detection tests in the heart of communities where people are less likely to come forward will help save lives - by finding and treating those who would otherwise have been undetected.

“Getting checked could save your life.”
