A BRADFORD schoolgirl has overcome difficulties at school to capture her first kickboxing title and follow in her brother's footsteps of winning multiple belts in the sport.

Emily Lai, 15, a student at Hanson Academy, became the WKO European A-Class K1 champion in the 50.1kg to 54kg weight last Sunday, but her journey to her first title has not been easy.

Emily trains at Team Fu Martial Arts in Kirkstall, and her head coach and stepdad Chun Fu said she has overcome challenges to earn her first kickboxing belt.

Chun said: "Emily had been kickboxing on and off, not really taking it seriously and to keep up with her fitness."

She began to take the sport seriously after some difficulties at school. Chun said Hanson had been very supportive of Emily during that time.

Emily and her brother Marcus, 14, who is a World, European, English and Grand Prix kickboxing champion in the 39.1kg to 43kg weight class, had to prepare for upcoming kickboxing tournaments.

Chun said: "We’ve had the full backing of Hanson school, allowing Emily and Marcus to train for these tournaments."

He added that Emily was motivated to take the sport seriously in order to build up her confidence.

"Within the first year, she competed in two tournaments, bringing home silver medals both times," said Chun.

"She didn’t stop there and was aiming for a gold, training four times a week and making sure her school criteria was met. She dedicated her time to both school and training.

"We knew the task ahead was difficult as a European Open was coming on April 23. Two groups were drawn, and a semi-final leading to a final would capture her a European title.

"We knew this was going to be tough as the girls in the groups were more experienced.

"When the day of the competition arrived, there was a nervous wait for a few hours.

"In her first semi-final, she won convincingly which led to the final.

"This was two fights straight after each other. After two gruesome rounds the decision went to the judges.

"It was very tense as it was a split decision but Emily’s hand was raised and she became the new WKO European female champion.

"She wanted it so much she fought her heart out.

"What Emily's done to regain her confidence is amazing. I'm very proud of her."

"She's hoping to follow Marcus in his footsteps and bring home English, British, and World titles."
