A THIRD of the seats on Bradford Council will be up for grabs in next month’s local elections, and the full list of candidates has now been revealed.

They include the majority of the Labour-led Council’s decision making Executive – including its leader, as well as some of the most prominent figures from all the major political parties in Bradford.

Residents will cast their votes on Thursday, May 4 for the first time since controversial new changes that will require voters to show photo ID were introduced by Government.

Like many local authorities, Bradford Council operates on a cycle where elections are held three out of every four years.

Each of these elections sees 30 out the of 90 Council seats contested.

Last year’s election saw Labour tighten its grip on the Council that it has held since 2010, when the party regained power after 10 years of Conservative rule.

The 2022 election also saw the Green Party double the number of Councillors it has on the authority after gaining three seats.

This year’s election, which will involve 139 candidates, could prove to be highly significant.

Council Leader Susan Hinchcliffe (Lab) is hoping to retain her Windhill and Wrose seat.

Her colleagues on the Labour Executive, Deputy Leader Imran Khan (Bowling and Barkerend), Executive for Healthy People and Places Sarah Ferriby (Wyke) and Executive for Children and Families Sue Duffy (Thornton and Allerton) are also up for re-election.

On the other side of the chamber, the leader of the Conservative opposition Rebecca Poulsen is looking to retain her Worth Valley seat.

And long standing Liberal Democrat Councillor Jeanette Sunderland (Idle and Thackley) is also up for re-election.

The main four political parties are fielding candidates in virtually every ward, with many Yorkshire Party candidates also on the ballots.

Parties including Reform UK and the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition are also fielding candidates, and several people are running as independents, including former Mayor of Bradford Zafar Ali (Keighley Central), who recently left the Conservatives.

Currently the Council is made up of 52 Labour Councillors, 20 Conservatives, six Liberal Democrats, six Green Councillors and six independents.

Here is the recently published list of all the candidates standing in this year’s local elections.
