A BRADFORD district village post office is set to move under new plans.

The Post Office is proposing to relocate its site in Gilstead from Gilstead Lane to Ferncliffe Stores, Ferncliffe Road, Bingley. There is a distance of 650 metres between the two branches, but customers have been warned that it is along hilly terrain for their visit to the new branch.

The postmaster at the Gilstead Lane, Gilstead, wishes to leave the network, according to the Post Office.

The organisation added that the vacancy was advertised and a team from the Post Office visited the area. The only applicant to take on the service was Ferncliffe Stores.

In a statement, a Post Office spokesman said: “We recognise this is further away, however, our priority is to maintain Post Office services in the area.

“Ferncliffe would operate as one of our local style branches with a Post Office serving point alongside the retail counter of the convenience store.”

The Post Office says the opening hours for the new Ferncliffe Stores site would be between 8am and 6pm seven days a week.

It added this would mean customers would have an extra 25 hours of service a week available inside the branch including all-day Sunday and Saturday afternoon. The proposed new branch would open earlier and close later every day. The Gilstead Lane branch is currently closed to customers each Sunday.

A similar range of products and services would still be available, but a National Lottery terminal would not be available at the proposed new site, but there is a Lottery machine available for customers at the Post Office in Main Street, Bingley.

The proposed premises would have a wide door and a step at the entrance. However, works would be carried out to make the step more accessible.

Roadside parking is available nearby the new proposed Post Office. There are local buses serving the surrounding area.

Consultation is now open on the relocation of the Gilstead Post Office, with customers invited to give their views on the move. Access into and within the store will close on Wednesday, May 17.
