A DOG owner has appeared in court after his Staffordshire bull terrier, Lady, injured two police officers.

Ashan Newell had initially pleaded not guilty to two counts of being the owner of a dog which was dangerously out of control.

But the 24-year-old changed his plea at a recent hearing at Kirklees Magistrates Court.

The incident took place at Nibshaw Lane, Cleckheaton, on October 6, 2021.

It is not known from the court documents what the nature of the police officers’ injuries was.

Newell, of Tunnacliffe Road, Newsome, was made the subject of a community order, at the hearing on March 21.

In addition, magistrates ordered that the dog must be kept under proper control by someone over the age of 16, and be securely on a lead as well as be fitted with a muzzle in public places.

Unless Newell sticks to these conditions, the dog is at risk of being destroyed.

Court documents show that magistrates came to this decision because they were satisfied that Lady did not constitute a danger as this appeared to be an isolated incident.

As part of the community order, Newell must complete up to ten rehabilitation activity requirement days.

He must also pay £200 in compensation and a victim surcharge of £95.
