RENOWNED for its ales, The Bulls Head has graced the pages of the Camra Good Beer Guide for many years.

“We are very proud of that,” says licensee Juanita Kearns, “We serve premium cask ale and have six hand pulls - five regulars and a rotating guest beer, a stout or porter.”

Ales brewed locally include Chinook Blonde from Goose Eye Brewery in Crossflatts and Saltaire Brewery’s Saltaire Blonde, as well as beers from Bingley Brewery.

Doom Bar from Sharp’s Brewery in Cornwall also goes down well, as does the ever-popular Tetley. “We have been told we sell the best of Tetley in the area,” says Juanita.

A landmark building in Baildon, The Bulls Head - our Telegraph & Argus Pub of the Week - is, says Juanita, a “real community pub".

"We have regulars who come in every day - you can set your clock by them - and we get new faces coming in too. I was born and grew up in Baildon so I know a lot of people.

“We get people who have been out for a walk on Baildon Moor or have walked over from Ilkley. On a weekend we put free food on the bar - sandwiches on Saturday and black pudding with dripping on Sunday. We are very welcoming.”

The Bulls Head is dog-friendly and home to family pets Elsie the springer spaniel and cockers Frank and Mavis.

There has been a building on the site since the 17th century when it is thought to have been a school. It is believed that the current building has been an inn since the late 19th century.

In the works of local historians John La Page and Paley Baildon there are several mentions of The Bulls Head having been a place for strolling players, flute bands and country theatre. William Tennant, licensee from 1884 to 1895, used to have a barrel of beer with a tap at each end - one for ‘best’ the other for ‘ordinary.’

Juanita has run the pub alongside husband Paul, a builder, for 11 years, having previously run pubs in Wibsey.

Over the years her family - some of whom work in the pub - have taken part in charity fundraising events to raise money for good causes, including a cycle ride from Baildon to Spain.

The pub’s cosy rooms - there’s a woodburner to add to the character - have pictures of old Baildon on the walls as well as a special wallpaper mural of the village in times gone by. “We had it specially made - it shows people going about their lives,” says Juanita.

“We are a very traditional pub, with no mod-cons - we have a TV in the tap room if people want to watch they can, and we have one on the lounge for special occasions.”

Quiz nights are Tuesday and Sunday. “Both nights are really popular. On Tuesdays we provide a free supper,” says Juanita.

Every fortnight there’s live entertainment with local bands which attracts a good crowd.

August bank holiday sees a music festival in the beer garden, an outdoor space which, it is hoped, will undergo a revamp in the future.
