WEST Yorkshire Police dealt with over 20 animal-related incidents in the space of 48 hours this week – and one of them may raise a few eyebrows.

On Thursday, the Force’s Wildlife & Rural Crime Unit reported that it had been called to an incident where a swan had been seen on the motorway.

The swan, although injured, was thankfully recovered and brought to safety.

The Wildlife & Rural Crime Unit even posted an image on social media – albeit a low-resolution one – seemingly showing the swan in peril.

Commenters praised the police for rescuing the bird, while one also offered a possible explanation for why it may have happened.

“In the past I’ve rescued a couple of swans off roads, in wet weather, they often seem to mistake the tarmac as water surface. Hope it’s ok,” she commented.

It was one of 22 incidents reported to the Wildlife & Rural Crime Unit between Wednesday and Friday.

The Unit said that 11 of those incidents were dog-related – being linked to bites, loose dogs and welfare and safety.

Six of the incidents involved loose horses, two involved other loose farm animals and three incidents – including the one with the swan – were categorised as ‘other’.
