A BRADFORD Beck campaigner has been selected as one of this year’s River Champions by the River Restoration Centre.

Barney Lerner, who is chairman of the Friends of Bradford’s Becks group will find out next month whether he will be named the overall UK champion.

River Champions seeks to celebrate the efforts of individuals contributing to river restoration in their area.

Each champion has been nominated by someone who works with them and has seen the impact they have had over a number of years.

A panel then selected the winners based on their impact and the amount of time they have contributed to improving rivers.

Mr Lerner told the Telegraph & Argus: “I'm delighted to have been chosen as one of this year's River Champions, although I see it as a recognition of the Friends of Bradford's Becks group.

“They are an enthusiastic bunch, many of whom have been helping with events and lobbying since the beginning in 2011.

“Now we are planning the Festival of the Becks 2023, an event on August 20 beside the Beck on Valley Road, Shipley.  We will be celebrating the improvements that have happened over the last 10 years with story-telling, music, guided tours and much else."

The 2023 UK River Prize awards dinner will take place in April 19 in Birmingham.
