SPEED bumps and a 20mph limit could soon be installed on a road outside a Bradford School.

The traffic measures were proposed by Bradford Council due to a number of crashes on Highfield Road, including one where a car hit the fence of Blakehill Primary School.

The £25,000 scheme will see new double yellow lines around the school entrance on Doctor Hill, a speed “plateau” and speed cushions, and the creation of a number of on-street parking bays on Highfield Road.

One person has objected to the plans, and so the scheme will have to go before Bradford Councils Bradford East and Shipley Area Committees for debate next week.

The objector said: “The drivers focus on navigating the humps and fail to focus on the route ahead, This will generate another hazard.

£40,000 traffic calming measures on Lumb Lane to go ahead

“The slowing, if any and accelerating after the humps particularly in an area of a school is not conducive to a clean air environment.”

In response to the claim drivers will be too focused on the humps to drive safely, highways officers pointed out that drivers are required to pay attention to multiple things, such as speed limits and traffic signs, on any stretch of road.

Referring to the concerns about clean air, they have added: “Conflicting studies have been produced regarding this issue. Some studies have stated nitrogen oxide levels increased in slower driving conditions, where as Carbon Monoxide and Hydro Carbon emissions were reduced.

“Other studies have shown that all levels of pollution were lowered.

“Having said this, we have to balance, taking action to reduce traffic collisions and increase road safety for all users against the issue of pollution.”
