A PROTEST is set to take place at Morrisons’ Bradford HQ amid an ongoing strike by the firm’s workers in Gibraltar over pay.

Members of union Unite are to gather at the Gain Lane site tomorrow morning (February 24) in protest over what they say are unfair wages.

Morrisons’ workers at its store in the British overseas territory 1,200 miles away have been on strike since January 30 in a dispute over a 2.4 per cent pay increase.

Unite says workers in Gibraltar earn around £2 per hours less than their counterparts in the UK for undertaking the same job – and this disparity is one of the main reasons for the dispute.

The current pay deal means that the lowest-paid worker at Morrisons Gibraltar will be paid £8.47 per hour – although this is above the minimum wage for Gibraltar, which is lower than the UK standard.

Unite general secretary, Sharon Graham said: “These workers are doing the same job as they would be in the UK, with the same bills to pay. Morrisons should be paying the rate for the job, it’s as simple as that.

“Morrisons can clearly easily afford to pay fairer wages, it is choosing not to. Our protest is just a warning shot.”

The T&A approached Morrisons for a comment, but the supermarket did not wish to say anything.
