LATEST NEWS: Chippie marking a year in with 'cheapest fish and chips' in country

A BRADFORD businessman has opened a fish and chip shop in the spot where the chippy he loved as a young lad once stood.

Iklaq Hafiz has opened Hooked on Summerville Road, off Great Horton Road.

It is in the same unit as a fish and chip shop Mr Hafiz used to love when he was a youngster.

And he has cause for celebration as the takeaway has been awarded a five-star hygiene rating.

It was the idea behind opening the shop that grabbed customers' attention.

Mr Hafiz said: "I am 36 years old and have lived across the road from the shop all of my life.

"Twenty five years ago, an old lady used to run it as a fish and chips shop.

"When I was at school, I remember always going there.

"It then closed down and 25 years later, we have brought it back."

The response has been overwhelming with many local customers returning to their old stomping ground.

"A lot of the local community still remember what it was," Mr Hafiz added.

"They are glad that a fish and chips shop has returned. We have had a great response so far.

"It changed hands multiple times over the years. It was a chicken shop for a while, then another shop for the last 10 years and now it's back to a chippy.

"I still remember when the lady used to only open for two-three hours and she used to have queues around the block. Those same customers are returning."

Mr Hafiz has run takeaways in the past, but never a fish and chip shop.

Burgers, pizzas, donner kebabs and paninis are also on the menu for hungry customers to enjoy.

When the Telegraph & Argus visited Hooked, the place looked fresh with a quirky sign reading 'you are the fish to my chips'.

Mr Hafiz and his staff were over the moon when they found out they had been awarded top honours on the hygiene front.

He said: "With it being my first food business for a long time, I was a bit nervous (when we were inspected). But it just proves that all the hard work pays off.

"We have joined JustEat and UberEats and have very good ratings. It is a nice, clean hygienic place.

"We have done the shop up and revamped it. Everything is brand new in here."
