A group of men who met through university are now set to launch their own mental health charity in Bradford.

The Sahara Initiative CiC was spoken into existence following conversations over cups of tea in cafes.

It is the brainchild of former University of Bradford students Husnain Hussain, Syed Ali, Zeeshaan Tariq, and Hamza.

The co-founders hope their work will raise awareness of mental health issues within minority ethnic communities and provide culturally sensitive workshops and training sessions.

It is hoped The Sahara Initiative will address different barriers and challenges in accessing culturally appropriate and representative support as well as dispelling stigma associated with mental illness.

The group’s first workshops will focus on culturally sensitive bereavement support for those grieving the loss of loved ones.

Bradford was among the worst-hit communities for deaths during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Husnain, who is also a social worker, said: “There’s power in reaching out, speaking out, and letting people know they’re not alone. As a community we can stand together, not just suffering in silence.

“The initial conversations we had, it was at cafes over mint tea. Some of us are professionals. At university we all had our own mental health issues.

“We’re starting the workshops at universities, at colleges, places of worship. Then we have stuff on social media in terms of awareness.”
