A MAN who claimed he fell asleep and did not pay for an extra part of a train journey to Bradford has been fined.

John Thackery, 40, of Brackenhill Lane, Selby, faced a charge of travelling beyond the distance paid for on the railway.

At Bradford Interchange train station, having paid the fare for a journey from Selby to Leeds, Thackery carried on by train beyond that distance without previously paying the additional fare for the extra distance.

When he arrived at Bradford Interchange on June 29, 2022, Thackery produced a TransPennine Smartcard valid from Selby to Leeds and had therefore overtravelled. When questioned, Thackery said he thought he could travel anywhere in Leeds. He also said he fell asleep when he left Leeds and when he woke up he had passed New Pudsey and that is why he was in Bradford.

His details were obtained and a letter was sent to Thackery requesting payment of the fare. As there was no response, a Fixed Penalty letter was then sent and the fare remains unpaid. The train fare avoided is £4.90.

Thackery was fined £220, ordered to pay £150 costs, £88 victim surcharge and £4.90 compensation, for a total of £462.90.

The case was proved in Thackery’s absence at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court on January 20, 2023.
