Everybody, at some point in their lives, have played a board game with family or friends. Whether it be a classic game of Monopoly, or a challenging game of Scrabble, us Brits love a board game, especially on cold, rainy Winter nights.

There are many varieties of board games. You might be the type of person who is ferociously competitive, enjoying the pride of being the sole winner, or you might be somebody who enjoys a cooperative game, where you win or lose as part of a team. Either way, board games are certainly one of the best things to do in a cozy evening, all year round.

Many of us will have fond memories of the traditional Christmas day game of Monopoly. In fact, in a GAME survey last year, Monopoly was rated as ‘the best Christmas game for families’ by its participants, and 37% of the people surveyed play the board game over the festive season. It is a world-wide favourite, available in 103 countries, and printed in over 35 languages.

However, if Monopoly isn’t your cup of tea, then perhaps you enjoy testing your brain in a game of Scrabble!

Scrabble was created in 1938, by an American architect called Alfred Mosher Butts. Sold in 121 countries and available in over 30 languages, 150 million sets have been sold worldwide. Approximately half of British families have a Scrabble set somewhere in their homes!

Of course, there are many other family favourites to pull out on a quiet evening when you’re not quite sure what to do. So, the next time you’ve got an idle moment, why not open the games cupboard and invite some friends around?
