A COLLEGE’S plans to turn a vacant Grade II listed building into a new training centre has been approved.
Planning officers said the proposals for the former data centre and CCTV control room on Currer Street would “continue a productive use of a listed building.”
CECOS College, which offers courses in subjects including business and social care, submitted an application to change the use of 8 Currer Street late last year.
Constructed in the 19th Century, and designed by architect Eli Milnes, the building was used as a warehouse during the glory days of Little Germany.

This area of the city centre has the highest concentration of Listed Buildings anywhere in Europe – with 8 Currer Street being one of them.
The application said: “The proposal is to use three floors mainly for IT labs for students and offices for staff, whereas the ground floor will be used as the main reception area.”

Approving the change of use last week, planning officers said: “The proposal will continue a productive use of a listed building in Little Germany Conservation Area. “The proposal maintains the character and appearance of the Little Germany conservation area and preserves the significance of the Grade II listed building.”
