The ‘Junior Road Safety Team’ at Horton Grange Primary School has been out in force again around the school.

Horton Grange, part of Exceed Academies Trust, formed the team in November 2022, in response to ongoing road safety issues in the area surrounding the school.

The team was formed following discussions with Year Six pupils who want to contribute to their local area and be active citizens.

They have been working with police, Council wardens, parking wardens and Councillor Aneela Ahmed (Lab, City) to remind drivers of the need to keep pupils safe.

Headteacher Rebecca Marshall said, “The children have been very keen to organise and take part in this action day and already planning the next one.  It is a great opportunity for the pupils to be able to contribute to the local community and be active citizens.

“We teach the children about road safety as part of our broad and balanced curriculum, and it was great to see the children put this into action. It is incredibly important that the children understand what it is to be an active citizen and the impact they can have.”

Cllr Ahmed said, “The fact that the children want to be involved in keeping our local community safe is wonderful. The roads surrounding the school can be very busy, especially at peak school times.”
