A BRADFORD woman says she had thousands of pounds worth of home décor ruined after consistent dampness and mould in her flat.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, moved into her Incommunities flat in May 2022. She claims to have made several complaints to the housing association, regarding the smell when she moved in, which she claims was from sewage in the floorboards and the mould in every room in her house.

Incommunities said it had received one previous complaint about damp and mould at the flat, and had taken action in response to that. It said it would now be revisiting the property to assess the situation and progress any work needed.

As someone who suffers from Asthma, among other disabilities, the woman claims the condition of her flat has enhanced her illnesses.

“My Asthma has got bad and I’m struggling.

“I’m coughing really badly and it’s stressing me out.

“I’ve complained about it, and they haven’t done anything - it’s like they don’t care.”

“Every room in this house is covered in mould and it’s ruined my brand-new curtains and wallpaper.

“The wallpaper is peeling off the walls and there’s mould all over it.

“I spent thousands on the décor when I moved in, and it’s ruined.”

Upon her arrival at this flat, the resident said she made Incommunities aware of the situation and highlighted how it was impacting her health.

“I’m really poorly at the minute and they need to sort out the damp and mould.”

On top of the mould issue, the woman suffers from severe stress and anxiety which is heightened by the creaky floorboards.

“Every time people in the flat above walk around, my heart starts beating really quickly and I’ve been going to the doctors about it.

“I’ve got to go for heart scans.”

A spokesperson for Incommunities said: “We are sorry to hear that this lady is not happy with the conditions in her home and we have been to the property today to assess the situation and progress any work needed.

“We can confirm that the only report we have had of damp and mould was on 21st July last year and subsequently we carried out gutter cleaning, repairs and cleaned and treated walls for damp and mould.  If further work is now needed, this will be completed.

“We have a team dedicated to deal with any reports of damp and mould and these will be addressed as a matter of urgency. We urge any customers to deal with any reports of damp and mould concerns on 0330 175 9540 or dampenquiries@incommunities.co.uk to ensure that we provide the necessary support.”
