It has been challenging to avoid noticing energy costs in recent months, and you most likely have heard about the recurring energy crisis. But what exactly is the energy crisis, and how are BRADFORD locals dealing with the issue?

What is causing the dilemma in energy?

Gas prices increased in 2021 because of high demand. Also, because nations started to recover from the pandemic, supply could not keep up with demand. The issue was worsened by a lack of energy generated. For example by renewable sources like solar and wind power. Also, the chilly winter months when more people had to turn up their heating.

Advice from BRADFORD locals!

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

After speaking to residents in the area, Nazia Mahmood said “I limit the use of digital alarm clocks, prevent using lights during daylight hours, but also refrain from leaving the TVs on standby.”  You may not be able to see the time in the dark but it saves you a few bills!

Mohammed N. Khan also advises “The best recommendation I have to offer is to shut all the curtains and blinds at night. Strangely, doing this isn't common. You may prevent warm air from exiting through windows and lower heating expenses by drawing your curtains and blinds.” The vibrant view of the city lights outside or the warmth inside?

Shabnam M. suggests “Use an app that informs how much energy has been used. Also, input an hour a day to your routine where no phones are being charged and there is no internet usage.”

How can YOU overcome soaring energy prices in 2023?

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

High energy costs cannot simply be avoided by refraining to do anything that could increase the price; let's look at some solutions:

  • Save up to £100 a year by lowering the flow temperature of your combi boiler to 60°C. - Lowering your thermostat won't significantly lower the temperature in your home. However, reducing flow temperature may delay the time it takes for the temperature to reach the set point.
  • Save up to £70 a year by reducing the temperatures of radiators in unoccupied rooms. - Turn radiator valves to between 2.5 and 3 (approximately 18°C) when not in usage. Turn the valve up to raise the temperature to a comfortable level as you use the room.
  • Save up to £70 a year by using your tumble dryer less. - One of the appliances in the home that consumes the most energy is the tumble dryer. Additionally, you should avoid overloading your dryer as this may extend the drying time.
  • Reduce the amount of time you spend in the shower. -  Lowering the time you spend the shower to 4 minutes could save you up to £100 annually per household!
