Police had to evacuate residents from their homes after a car crashed into a fish and chip shop on Saturday night.

West Yorkshire Police received reports of extensive damage to Westfield Fisheries, found on Westfield Avenue in Yeadon, at 10.17pm.

The incident sparked a road closure into the early hours as police cordoned off the A65 from Greenlea Avenue to Whackhouse Lane.

Police discovered two occupants of the vehicle at the scene with minor injuries.

A police spokesperson confirmed the crash has caused significant damage to the building, including a gas pipe.

A total of 16 people had to be evacuated from their homes as a safety precaution.

They were allowed to return home at 10 past two on Sunday morning.

Enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing, a spokesperson confirmed.
