TWO Bradfordians have been fined for not wearing their seatbelts in the front seat of a vehicle over the past couple of months.

Lancashire Police said it was looking into Rishi Sunak after the Prime Minister apologised for failing to wear a seatbelt while filming a social media clip in the back of a moving car.

The law dictates that drivers and passengers over the age of 14 must wear a seatbelt.

If you fail to wear one, you could be punished with a fine of up to £500 - £1000 of which could be on the spot.

Earlier this month, Mohammed Imran Khan, of Mayo Drive in Bradford, was fined £146 for the offence.

The 32-year-old committed the crime in the front seat of a vehicle on Huddersfield Road on July 20 last year.

In December, Danish Asif, of Parsonage Road, Laisterdyke, was sentenced for failing to wear his seatbelt on May 11, 2022.

The 24-year-old was in the front seat of a Mercedes-Benz in Raynes Park, London.

He was fined £220 when his case was heard at South East London Magistrates' Court.

The Prime Minister apologised for the Instagram video, posted on Thursday, which promotes his levelling-up funding during his visit to Lancashire.

Downing Street released a statement following the incident explaining that the PM had made a “brief error of judgment” by removing the safety device for the clip.

The spokesman said that Mr Sunak “fully accepts this was a mistake and apologises".

“The Prime Minister believes everyone should wear a seatbelt," he said.

“It was an error of judgment, he removed it for a short period of time to film a clip, which you’ve seen, but he accepts that was a mistake.”

In the video, Mr Sunak addressed the camera and police motorbikes could be seen alongside the car.

In an update this evening (Friday, January 20) Lancashire Police said: "“You will be aware that a video has been circulating on social media showing an individual failing to wear a seat belt while a passenger in a moving car in Lancashire.

“After looking into this matter, we have today issued a 42-year-old man from London with a conditional offer of fixed penalty.”

The Government has recently been considering toughening seatbelt rules to ensure drivers not wearing them could receive penalty points.

Following the video, the AA issued a warning about the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt.

“No matter who you are, it is important to wear your seatbelt when in the car,” an AA spokesperson said.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has also said “everyone should take seatbelt laws seriously – whoever and wherever they are”.
