The son of a Bradford woman who was murdered by her neighbour has spoken about the next stage of his healing journey.

Mum-of-five Vera Hudson, 57, was brutally killed at her home in September 2019.

Humberside Police said the murder had left Vera’s family with “unimaginable grief” on the day of her killer’s sentencing.

Mark Jewitt, 25, of Constable Street, Hull, received a life sentencve at Grimsby Crown Court in March 2020.

But bringing Jewitt to justice was only the start of a long battle with loss.

Now on a mission to leave a lasting legacy for his mum, Daniel Galloway has already raised hundreds of pounds through a 57 mile-long charity walk for Victim Support.

His next challenge will see him skydive for the same charity, which supports victims of crime and traumatic incidents.

The dad of two, who grew up in Allerton, said: “They were just there with me from the start when I lost my mum.

“They got me through some tough times.

“I’ve had a couple of overdoses since I lost my mum. I had hit some very, very low points. I’ve spoken to counsellors, mental health teams and friends and family.

“I try not let things bother me too much. It’s just the flashbacks I get with the phone call when I first found out and then trying to imagine myself being there, even though I wasn’t there. I go to sleep, thinking about the events building up to it.”

In a message to anyone who is facing mental health struggles, Daniel said: “Speak to friends and family and people that keep you going. Try and remain strong. Even when you think it’s got the better of you don’t, you’re winning by not letting it defeat you.”

Daniel, who attended Allerton Road First School, said his mum was “born and bred in Bradford”.

“I know my mum would be proud of me and doing something like this, it’s nice,” he said.

Describing how he’ll feel on the day of the skydive, he said: “I’ll probably be a little bit anxious but I don’t let many things phase me. I’d be more annoyed if I don’t push myself to do it.

“I know the reasons behind it and why I’m doing it.”
