Emergency gas works along popular routes through Bradford district are set to last for several weeks.

Northern Gas Networks (NGN) is carrying out essential work to maintain the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the Baildon area.

It comes after several emergency repairs to the ageing main in recent times.

NGN, the gas distributor for the North of England, has prioritised the area for an urgent mains replacement.

The ageing metal pipework will be replaced by new, more durable plastic pipes, to ensure a safe and reliable supply of gas to customers.

Meanwhile work will also prepare the gas network for the future, when pipes will transport alternative greener fuels such as hydrogen.

Starting on January 23, the works are expected to last for approximately 16 weeks.

It has been planned in collaboration with Bradford Council – meaning any diversion routes will be classed as a priority for gritting.

Road closures and diversions

NGN is set to put some traffic management measures in place so engineers can carry out the work safely and efficiently, and to protect the public, some traffic management measures will be put in place.

There will be a road closure on Moorgate/Northgate for approximately two weeks, between January 30, 2023, to February 17, 2023.

The road closure may be extended if difficulties in the mains configuration is identified.

Traffic will divert to The Grove, West Lane, Lucy Hall Drive, Glen Road, Bingley Road and then back on to Hawksworth Road.

Signs will be displayed for motorists and a full signed diversion put in place.

Digital signs are providing motorists with advanced notification.

While the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access customer properties to complete the project and ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.

Chris Green, business operations lead for NGN, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Bradford.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”
