A MAN who died following tragedy on a residential street died of head and chest injuries, the opening of his inquest was told.

Mohammad Ilyas died on Friday, December 23 last year.

Police were called to Kenmore Road, Cleckheaton, at around 5am following reports a car had collided with a fence and had come to a stop in the garden of a house.

“Upon attending, officers found a male with serious head injuries lying on the floor nearby," West Yorkshire Police said at the time.

“The male was taken to hospital by ambulance but sadly died before arriving."

The inquest into Mr Ilyas’s death was opened and adjourned by Senior Coroner Martin Fleming at Bradford Coroners’ Court today (Tuesday, January 17).

Mr Fleming confirmed Mr Ilyas, who was from Halifax and understood to be an Uber driver, was found a short distance away from the garden of the home where his vehicle was found after suffering serious injuries.

The inquest is scheduled to resume on May 9, the hearing was told.

Speaking at the opening of the inquest in Bradford, Mr Fleming said: “There had been a collision into the garden of an address on Kenmore Road.

“I am waiting for further information from the police about the criminal inquiry.

“I have asked for that to be sent to me in the next seven days.”

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "We are preparing a file for the coroner and it will be submitted in due course."

In a statement issued on December 28, police said Mr Ilyas' death was not being treated as suspicious.

A police spokesman said: “Enquiries remain ongoing regarding this matter, but the death is not currently being treated as suspicious.

At the time of the incident, Kenmore Road was blocked off from both ends and there was a heavy emergency services presence. 

Police remained at the scene into the evening.
