RESIDENTS have told of terrifying scenes on a residential street in Bradford as a gun was fired at a house in the early hours of the morning.

One neighbour heard a loud bang and described seeing two balaclava-clad men 'on bikes hitting the door with a machete'.

Officers were called to Christopher Court, near Thorp Garth, Idle, at 1:34am on January 11 after reports that two men armed with a firearm approached a house and discharged the weapon.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "I first heard a loud bang but there were two shots.

"When I heard it I thought it was my car windows gone through.

"There were two guys on bikes hitting the door with a machete trying to get into house.

"A woman shouted out from the upstairs window asking what they were doing.

"One of them pulled out what looked like a rifle. They didn't seem to care."

She said the men were all in black and wearing helmets, goggles and balaclavas.

"After it happened a lot of the neighbours came to check on her.

"We have a really close community around here. We look out for each other.

"But we've had other incidents around here, so people have got ring doorbells.

"There's never a dull moment around here. You hear a bang in the night and you wonder what's next.

"It's scary stuff. We don't sleep much."

She did say, despite the incidents, there is a good community spirit in the new housing development.

"We don't have back gardens, so in the summer the kids play outside and we set up paddling pools.

"It's a family friendly street, so it's stressful when you wake and hear something like this going on.

"This street, Christopher Court, was named after Christopher Kershaw, the soldier who died in Afghanistan in 2012.

"If his family knew what was happening here, I don't know what they'd think."

Police said nobody was injured in the incident.

A scene was in place for much of yesterday for forensic examination to take place.

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Holdsworth, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “Clearly any firearms discharge will cause some concern in the local community, and I would like to reassure members of the public that we take all firearms incidents extremely seriously and we have extensive enquiries underway to identify those responsible.

“Neighbourhood Patrols have been stepped up in the area to provide reassurance."
